President's Letter: Changes

Monday, October 07, 2013

Autumn brings change in certain parts of the world as the air gets colder and the leaves turn brilliant shades of red, yellow, and orange. Changes have also occurred at Rising Star. In July, Steele Hendershot resigned as Executive Director. Steele has a great passion for Rising Star and his dedication and devotion is greatly appreciated.  Since he and his family have been part of our organization for many years, their legacy will live on because of the service they graciously provided.  Best wishes to Steele and his family in their new endeavors and adventures!

Rising Star is pleased to announce that effective October 23, 2013, Mr. Tyler Vigue will become Executive Director. Tyler is a native of New Jersey and has a MPA degree from the University of Nebraska and a BA in philosophy from Brigham Young University.  He has maintained certification as a Fundraising Executive (CFRE) -- an internationally recognized certification in the field of fundraising. He brings nine years of fundraising experience to Rising Star and through his leadership and expertise our mission to support those affected by leprosy will continue to move forward. We welcome Mr. Vigue to Rising Star Outreach!

Another type of ‘change’ involves coins or donations from thoughtful people. This past month Rial Smedley from Connecticut celebrated his fourth birthday by asking his friends to donate money to Rising Star Outreach so he could not only raise awareness, but also money to purchase school supplies for the UKG class in India. He raised over $300!

Hayley Greer, a beautiful girl from Utah who has an intellectual disability and Autism, raised money to provide a goat for a micro-business! Hayley’s mother shared that she was overwhelmed with gratitude to find a niche where Hayley could help others while helping herself. What amazing young people!

Mother Teresa said, “Every act of love is a work of peace, no matter how small.”  The kind acts of our supporters and volunteers, like Rial and Hayley, support our work in lifting individuals and families who face the physical and social stigma of leprosy. Heartfelt thanks to all of you for the 'acts of love' and 'works of peace' you do that greatly advance Rising Star's purpose and mission.
